If I have a URL embedded in my code and I hover my mouse over it, the editor gives options to open the URL in a browser. If I click on the URL code (and not the "open in browser" drop-down options) the URL is opened in a browser anyway.

It's preferable not to have this functionality as the primary behaviour - rather, the "open in browser" options only appear, say, if I'm holding down Ctrl.
